Fertilizer Production
There is no primary production of chemical fertilizers in Côte d'Ivoire, but an organic fertilizer production sector is being developed. ELEPHANT VERT is the main producer of organic fertilizers in the country. The
production of organic fertilizers is developing more and more. From 5,000 mt in 2017, it has increased to
about 15,000 mt in 2018, and to 18,800 mt in 2019.
Fertilizers are imported in bulk. Most of these fertilizers are used as raw materials to produce blended
fertilizers. Five companies (YARA, SOLEVO (ex LDC), AGRO WEST AFRICA, SEAPCI, and SEA INVEST) have fertilizer blending units to produce blended fertilizers for the Ivorian market and for the sub-region
(Burkina, Mali, etc.). The blended volumes represent an average of 3/4 of imports per year. The rest is NPK
for direct application.
OCP and IVOIRE FORMULATION have plans to install fertilizer blending units in Abidjan and Yamoussoukro
respectively, which are scheduled to start up in 2021.
Fertilizer Imports
Côte d'Ivoire mainly imports six fertilizers: MOP, Urea, TSP, DAP, NPK and Ammonium Sulphate. These
fertilizers are used either in direct application (MOP, Urea, NPK) or as raw materials (MOP, Urea, TSP, DAP,
Ammonium Sulphate) to produce NPK blends.
Fertilizer Exports
As there is no primary production of chemical fertilizers in Côte d'Ivoire, fertilizers are mainly imported in
bulk, blended, and bagged before being re-exported. In 2019, fertilizer re-exports increased significantly.
from 15,310 mt in 2018 to 76,591 mt in 2019. NPK were the most exported fertilizers to neighboring Burkina
Faso, Niger, and Mali.
