In the market, we often see colorful fertilizer, such as compound fertilizer, urea, water-soluble fertilizer, controlled-release fertilizer, coated fertilizer. These are not only a color, but also the price  is relatively high.

Some says this is because the color fertilizer added trace elements, the price is high, and very popular for farmers. But others say it’s just a stain that does nothing for the soil.

What does “colored” fertilizer mean?

Colored fertilizer, that can be roughly divided into the following two situations:

One is the raw material itself with color, or added some natural color substances (such as humic acid additives).
We often hear about synergistic urea – black urea, which is a gray-black urea with humic acid added.

The other is that some dyes are added to the fertilizer (some enterprises use food-grade pigments, ferric oxide series pigments, etc.) to make the fertilizer colorful.

Fertilizer itself has color, why do a lot of fertilizer manufacturers to fertilizer on a color?

At first, many large manufacturers dyed fertilizers on different colors, mostly for the following reasons:

(1) since most of the traditional fertilizers are of the same color and have many kinds of fertilizers, farmers are not easy to identify. Therefore, different colors of fertilizers are designed to enable people to quickly identify fertilizer types by colors.

(2) fertilizer without color (such as transparent fertilizer) is difficult to see the concentration of fertilizer by naked eyes after dilution, while dyed fertilizer can roughly determine the concentration of fertilizer by the color depth after dilution.

(3) some functional colored ingredients were added, which led to a change in the color of the fertilizer in order to improve the fertilizer efficiency. For example, some humic acid was added to improve the quality of the fertilizer.

(4) due to the requirements of facility agriculture, water-soluble fertilizers will be used in large quantities. In order to determine whether the fertilizer solution in the transparent water pipe has passed through, the fertilizers will often be dyed to facilitate the observation and control of the amount of fertilizer applied.

What color is conventional fertilizer?

The following conventional fertilizers are sorted out for your reference:

Ammonium bicarbonate, white or light colored;

Ammonium chloride, white or yellowish;

Ammonium sulfate, white or yellowish;

Urea, generally white, containing impurities generally pale yellow;

Ammonium nitrate, white or light yellow in appearance;

Calcium superphosphate, off-white or grayish;

Calcium sulfate, white, gray yellow, gray green, light brown and so on;

Diammonium phosphate, gray, off-white or off-brown, but also some light yellow;

Potassium nitrate, white or light colored;

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, usually white transparent crystal, but also some yellow crystal;

Organic fertilizer, biological organic fertilizer, generally brown to dark brown particles or powder;

Water soluble fertilizers with amino acids and humic acid are available in both solid and liquid forms. The liquids of these two kinds of water soluble fertilizers generally have colors, which are brown, black and green.

Trace elements in water-soluble fertilizer, generally white powdered or transparent liquid, will also show a variety of colors according to different states, such as ionic iron fertilizer green, red, but EDTA chelated iron fertilizer is mostly white.
