Fertilizer Application In a Drought Regions
At least 80 countries in the world are arid and semi-arid, and about 40 percent of the world’s population is affected by drought at the same time.Take an example of China,its arid climate areas are Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Qinghai and western Inner Mongolia, accounting for more than one-third of the national territory. Compared with other regions, agricultural production conditions are relatively poor, but these years we have witnessed rapid development and great potential for increasing production.We’d like to demonstrate how to fertilize in arid areas.
The first characteristic is a dry climate with less annual precipitation, but evaporation is bigger, however, besides a part of farmland has river irrigation condition, lack of water is the biggest obstacle of agricultural production.According to this characteristic, fertilization must be combined with water-saving irrigation.
The second characteristic is low soil fertility, lack of nitrogen, phosphorus and relatively more potassium, but appropriate application of some potash fertilizer is still effective for high-yield crops and fruits, vegetables, fruit trees and other economic crops.
The third characteristic is that most soil is high in salt content, farmer needs to apply more organic fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer, give less or do not apply potassium chloride, ammonium chloride and so on to chloridization fertilizer contained except rice.
In cold climate regions, soil temperature is low in early spring, and fertilizer effect is slow. In addition, spring wheat and potato have a short growth period and are planted early, so the amount of base fertilizer should be increased and the proportion of fertilizer application in seedling stage should be increased.
