Foliar fertilizer application is the way to make plant leaves absorb nutrient elements. It is also known as foliar fertilization, it is a way of spraying fertilizer on leaves.
Foliar fertilization can make nutrients directly get into the plant body from the leaves, and foliar fertilizer also can be involved in crop metabolism and organic synthesis process, and thus it is more rapid and effective than soil fertilization. Therefore, foliar fertilizer often is an effective measures to treat crop deficiency syndrome.
During fertilization, we should apply top dressing fertilizer according 
to the actual fertilizer application situation of different crops in different growth period. We should pay attention to the feature of rapid reaction of foliar fertilizer to ensure normal growth as well as high yield and quality of plant in the appropriate fertilizer and water condition.
Why we apply the foliage fertilizer?
1, To supply more fertilizer. When the root fertilization of crop is not convenient, such as in the late growth of the crop, the root vitality is reduced, the ability to absorb fertilizer is slow; or when the soil environment is not good for crop growth, such as excessive moisture, drought, soil acid, alkali, will lead to crop roots absorption blocking. Because crops need to quickly resume growth and the root fertilizer can not meet the needs of crops in time, so we have to apply foliar fertilizer to quickly add nutrition to meet the needs of crop growth and development.
2, To quickly add nutrition. During the crop growth process, the crop is lack of nutrient element. The soil fertilizer requires a certain amount of time to be absorbed by crops and it can not timely alleviate crop element deficiency symptoms. At this time, the use of foliar fertilization can make nutrients quickly get into the plant through the leaves.
3, To make fertilizer fully played. If some fertilizers like phosphorus, iron, manganese, copper, zinc, etc., are applied on roots, they are easy to be fixed by soil and affect the application effect. However, the foliar fertilizer will not be affected by soil conditions. For example, some fruit trees and other deep root crops can absorb small amount of some nutrient. The traditional fertilization method is difficult to apply to the root so that the fertilizer can not fully played, and in this time, foliage spraying can be better way to promote fertilizer absorption.
4, Economic. A variety of trace elements is the
essential nutrients of crop growth and development, but the trace elements application is small, such as molybdenum fertilizer, its application only a few grams per acre, and its even root application is not easy. According to the study, the general crop with foliar spraying, its boron utilization is 8.18 times of the base fertilizer. Therefore, the foliar fertilizer is more economic.
5, To reduce soil pollution. There are lot of soil are applied with nitrogen which will easily lead to the nitrate accumulation of groundwater and vegetables so that harm to human health. Approximately, 75% of the nitrate absorbed by humans comes from vegetables. If the foliar fertilization method is adopted and the amount of soil fertilizers can be reduced appropriately, and the nitrate content in the plant and the residual mineral nitrogen in the soil can be reduced. In salinized soil, soil fertilization may increase soil concentration and soil salinization. To apply foliar fertilizer can not only save the amount of fertilizer, but also reduce the soil and water pollution.
